Your captions represent an opportunity to include a call-to-action within your posts, and it’s what ties your image or video to your brand and to your followers. Improving your Instagram captions is a great way to significantly increase your post engagements, and can help you acquire more followers too.

6 Ways to Improve Your Instagram Captions

Many marketers feel that since the image is what calls the most attention to Instagram posts, the captions are not as important and therefore, do not require the same amount of effort. But captions represent an opportunity to include a call-to-action within your posts, and it’s what ties your image or video to your brand and to your followers. Improving your Instagram captions is a great way to significantly increase your post engagements, and can help you acquire more followers too.

 1. Tell a Story

All brands should be story tellers. Especially since every brand has a story to tell. Work your story into your captions. Including what motivated and inspired the creation of the business, brand or product is a great place to start.

 2. Make ’em Laugh!

Taking yourself too seriously in your Instagram captions is a sure-fire way to get ignored, or even laughed at for the wrong reasons. While it’s not all fun and games, your followers mostly treat browsing their Instagram feeds as a leisurely activity. Keeping your captions light and funny will keep your followers from getting bored with your content or tuning you out for being too salesy. You don’t have to be funny all the time. Just don’t be all serious or promotional ALL the time.

3. Ask some Questions

Asking questions for your followers to answer, like offering an opinion on a question, or asking what their favorite recipe, colour, season, or which of your products they like most provides your followers with a sense of community and empowerment. Captions that ask questions also prompt answers. That brings the potential for a lot of comments! Comments shows engagement. Engagement is good! Just keep in mind that there is a major difference between meaningful engagement and meaningless engagement. Keep it meaningful by asking questions that align with your post and your business, brand or product. This will result in answers that could provide valuable insight into your customers that can inform future business decisions, like what new products to offer.

 4. #Hashtags!

Choose the right hashtags for your brand, and make sure they are related to your post. Mix between branded and non-branded hashtags. Especially since Instagram introduced hashtag following, the use of them in posts can greatly increase post visibility, engagement and can get you a lot of new followers too.

5. Nuture Your Followers with Your Captions

Try to incorporate tagging your followers in your captions, especially those of influence or those that have expressed a strong affinity for your brand. And if a follower happens to post about your product, regram that whenever possible. It gives love back to the follower who tagged your brand, and it shows the other followers that you have some real big fans out there.

6. Encourage Your Followers to Tag People

Mix in some captions that ask your followers to tag their friends. This will serve to introduce your brand to other Instagram accounts. This can increase your following and help you build your customer base.

Well crafted captions can help you build your following and your engagement on Instagram. They should never be treated as an afterthought. There needs to be a sound strategy around them that fits in with your business, brand and products, aligns with your content strategy and resonates with your followers.
